U.K. Gets Green Light to Start Cruises in May

In another positive sign for the recovery of the cruise industry, the UK has proposed that cruises start as early as the 17th. May begins domestic cruises between English ports.



P&O, the UK’s largest cruise line, is planning Staycation Ultimate Escape cruises this summer.

P&O Cruises, the UK’s largest cruise line, recently cancelled all international voyages for the summer and announced that it will instead offer Ultimate Escape – UK voyages. Coastal cruises. Details will be announced later this month.

Princess Cruises recently announced that its ships Regal Princess and Sky Princess will be offering short vacations and one-week trips from Southampton this summer. Cruises are only available to customers in the United Kingdom. Expedition cruise line Hurtigruten will also offer a range of yachts exclusively in British waters this summer.

Increasing pressure on the roadmap for recovery in the US

The government of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has presented a roadmap, with tentative dates, for the reopening of the tourism sector. This is something that has never been done in the U.S. – especially with regard to cruises – and there is increasing pressure to implement such a plan.

It’s troubling that we don’t have clear guidelines on what to do to welcome back international travelers, said Roger Doe, president and CEO of the American Travel Association, at a press conference last week. The US government needs to set a date – mid to perhaps late May – so people can start planning.

Cruise lines operating out of U.S. ports are still waiting for technical guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help them prepare for the sea trials allowed by the CDC Conditional Sailing Order, issued on 30. October 2020 has been released.

The test is heading for a new restart

In the UK, it looks like this summer’s shorts will essentially be tests for a wider reboot.

According to a joint statement from Cruise Lines International and the British Chamber of Shipping, the industry has long been planning a gradual resumption of cruise travel, the first phase of which would include domestic travel.

Over the past year, the industry has worked with the government to develop health protocols that prioritize the safety of our passengers and crew. Many of these protocols have already been successfully tested in other European countries where the cruise has worked.

Cruise ships are successful in Singapore: The short, purely local sailings aboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas were so popular that the program has been extended for another three months.

More and more ships also sail in Europe, including those of Costa, MSC and AIDA. And Royal Caribbean recently announced that the new Odyssey of the Seas will be homeported in Haifa, Israel, starting in May. It will offer cruises only to Israelis who are fully vaccinated.
