Where is the cruise port of Miami?

The Miami cruise port is located on Dodge Island, in the sheltered waters of the intracoastal waterway. The port is just 8 miles east of Miami International Airport (MIA), within sight of the architecture of downtown Miami and the towers of Miami Beach/South Beach.

Best route from Miami airport to cruise port

Miami Cruise Port is connected to Miami International Airport by the busy Dolphin Expressway (SR 836), which is a toll road.

This leads directly from the airport to the Port Miami Tunnel – take the “Miami Beach/MacArthur Causeway” exit and follow the signs to the Port Miami Tunnel and N. Cruise Blvd.

The trip takes about 12 minutes in good traffic. But during rush hour it can take twice as long!

Free option

To avoid the toll booth, from the airport take NW17 to 27th Avenue, then drive east on North River Drive northwest. Exit NW8th St, turn south on Miami Ave, then east on NE5th St, which turns into Port Blvd. You can then follow the signs to your cruise terminal.

This free ride usually takes at least 30 minutes, and much longer during peak periods. If you’re running out of time, it’s worth paying a small fee (about $2) to take the Dolphin Speedway, giving you enough time to check in for the cruise and set sail.

Cruise Shuttle from Miami Airport to Cruise Port

All major cruise lines offer the option of reserving a seat on a shuttle between the airport and the ship, organized and managed by the cruise line.

You should be able to reserve a seat on the shuttle when you book your cruise, either through your agent or directly on the cruise website.

During the cruise, you can also book a return transfer from the cruise port to the Miami airport aboard the excursion desk.

Advantages and disadvantages of Cruise Shuttles

A plus is that the shuttle will take you and your luggage directly from the Miami airport to the boat. Once you have reserved your seat on the cruise shuttle, you can relax and start looking forward to the cruise. In case of delay, the cruise will not leave without you!

At the end of your cruise, you have the advantage of a cruise shuttle that the cruise line will take care of everything.

You will be assembled in the lounge, your luggage will be waiting for you in a special room, and you will be given priority for disembarkation.

Using a cruise shuttle is by far the easiest option for transferring from the Miami airport to the cruise port.

However, you may have to sit and wait for other passengers to arrive before the shuttle leaves for the cruise terminal.

Another disadvantage of these cruise shuttles is that they only work on the day of your cruise. Thus, they are not suitable if you plan to travel to Miami a day or two before your cruise (which is advisable to avoid any problems caused by bad weather or flight cancellations).

Cruise transfers can be a cost-effective option, especially if you are traveling with a family or group. Unlike cabs or carpooling, cruise transfers cost per person, not per vehicle.

The Carnival Cruise Line charges about $17 per person each way for transfers between the airport and the Port of Miami, and other cruise lines charge a similar amount. For a couple, this adds $68 to your cruise!

If you are traveling with your family or group, it is much cheaper to book your own public transportation, such as a private cab, Uber or van.

There are several ways to get a free cruise shuttle. If you book with a cruise line, a courtesy shuttle is usually available at an additional cost.

Additionally, if you book a shore excursion after the cruise to explore other Miami attractions, you will be dropped off at the airport with your luggage upon request. This is an easy way to fill the day at the end of the cruise and pick you up at the airport.

Low-cost transfers from Miami airport to the cruise port

As an alternative to the official cruise lines, there are independent buses that offer pre-booked transportation between the Miami airport and the cruise port.

They are usually cheaper than cruise lines and use minivans to transport groups of passengers in private or shared vans.

Cabs are a very simple and convenient option if you have not booked your transportation from the airport to Port Miami in advance. The staff will direct you to the next available cab.

Drivers help carry luggage and provide a comfortable ride to the air-conditioned cruise terminal in about 12 minutes if traffic is smooth.

There is a flat rate, currently $27, and that is for the car. This is especially advantageous if you are traveling with your family or with a group of up to 4 passengers.


Uber and Lyft offer convenient shared transfers between the Miami airport and the cruise port. They are generally slightly cheaper than cabs (about $20 per vehicle) and offer more personalized service.

Passenger Car/Limousine Transportation

If you are looking forward to the cruise of a lifetime, why not arrive at the cruise terminal in luxury?

You can book a private car or chauffeured limousine to pick you up at the airport, then sit back and enjoy the ride.

The ride takes at least 12 minutes and costs between $100 for a luxury sedan, $125 for a van and $150 for a private limousine.

Depending on the size of your group, you can book a private car, van or stretch limousine. Vehicle upgrades are available, as well as mini-buses, so you can book exactly the service you need for your transportation from the airport to the Miami cruise port.

Public transportation between Miami airport and the cruise port

Train/Miami metro

You can take the train/tram from the Miami airport to the waterfront, but for the last distance you will have to take a cab.

Trains run every 20 minutes between Miami International Airport and Government Center Station. The ride takes 15 minutes and costs $2. Then you need to take the subway (every 5 minutes) to get to Bayfront Park Station. This takes 6 minutes and costs an additional $2.

This option is inexpensive and avoids the famous traffic problems in the city, but it takes you and your luggage 1.8 miles from the cruise terminal. A cab costs $12 extra.


There are buses from the airport train station to the Palais MacArthur/ Rue de la Fontaine. However, you will then have to take a cab to the port itself on Dodge Island, so this is not recommended.

Transfer to the hotel in the port of Miami

If you plan to arrive at the Miami airport before the cruise and spend a night or two at the hotel, you can avoid paying for transportation to the cruise port.

Choose a Miami hotel that offers a free shuttle to the airport and/or cruise port. Many hotels offer a free shuttle service or charge a nominal fee.
