Information and Technology Are Key to the Travel Industry’s Future

There is no doubt that the tourism sector has been hit hard by the COWID-19 pandemic.

From stricter health and safety measures to contactless omnibuses, the travel industry has faced the challenges of the past year with determination.

The Travel Tech Association represents companies like Airbnb, Vrbo, TripAdvisor, Booking and Expedia. It recently published a report titled Future Travel Enthusiasm in the Age of COWID-19, which documents trends such as B. people’s enthusiasm for planning their future trips, the changing needs of travelers, and the evolution of the travel industry during the pandemic and recovery period.

We spoke with Steve Schur, CEO of Travel Tech, to find out more.

(TP) : A new travel technology report shows that the vast majority of respondents rely more than ever on technology to feel safe. How has travel technology adapted to this situation and how do you see the future of travel technology?

Steve Schur: COVID-19 has changed the way people think about travel. Target selection, investigation criteria and medical awareness along the way have changed as a result of the pandemic. Technology makes travel possible again. From displaying destination information to facilitating travel at airports, the technology used by Travel Tech members provides consumers with the tools they need to make informed decisions, minimize risk and maximize safety while traveling.

TA: The demand for holiday accommodation in and around the house is very high this year. Do you think this trend will continue after the pandemic?

Shur: Yes, everything points to a sharp increase in domestic travel and a preference for outbound travel and visits, indicating greater demand for vacation rentals. A recent Vrbo survey found that 65% of respondents plan to travel more than before the pandemic. 59% of households said they were more likely to travel by car than by plane, and 61% said they were more likely to visit rural destinations. With the introduction of the vaccine, an increase in local car traffic, domestic air traffic and international traffic can be expected.

TA: In your opinion, has the pandemic irrevocably changed the travel industry or the way people will travel in the future?

Shur: The information travelers seek when booking a trip will now include a whole new set of data. From travel restrictions and medical information to new or different travel or sightseeing requirements, consumers need more information than ever to feel confident when booking their next trip. That’s why Travel Tech members have developed tools for consumers and agents, such as B. TripAdvisor’s Travel Safe information package and Travelport’s Stay Safe filters for travel agents who book hotels for their clients.

TA: What do you think people’s attitudes will be when they plan a trip after a pandemic instead of before?

Shur: People will enjoy travel more than ever. After a year of isolation, the world is eager to get out and travel again. I think people will become more aware of their environment and their surroundings and look for more sustainable ways to get around. You will also gain a better understanding of tourism and all it has to offer. The TripAdvisor survey found that 69% of respondents said they spend more time planning a trip, and 54% of respondents said they are more likely to travel based on a to-do list. Travellers are motivated to travel, not least because of increased security measures and the widespread introduction of the KOVID-19 vaccine.

TA: And finally: What can travel advisors and travelers do now to prepare for future travel?

Shur: Travelers are already planning their 2021 vacations using the search and consultation tools of OTAs, short-term rentals and metasearch platforms. Travel consultants need to prepare for the increase in travel and work with their distribution partners to get all the information they need to properly serve their clients. We still have work to do, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
