MSC Grandiosa Cruise Ship: Overview & Must-Know Things

If you’re looking for a truly advanced ship for your next cruise, look no further than the MSC Grandiosa. Part of the massive Meraviglia Plus class, this ship is revolutionary in more ways than one.

The first of three Meravilla Plus class ships to debut in late 2019, it impressed cruise passengers and tourism professionals alike with its eco-friendly design, abundance of entertainment features and overall luxury.

Does this boat look like exactly what you want to experience on your next cruise? We’ve put together a complete overview and everything you need to get the most out of your cruise on the MSC Grandiosa.

MSC Grandiosa Statistics

There is no denying the size of the MSC Grandiosa. This ship is one of the “mega ships” of the world and will be the ninth largest cruise ship in the world as of early 2021 (although it started as the sixth largest cruise ship).

The ship shares this space with its sister ship, the MSC Virtuosa, and closely watches the long-awaited Mardi Gras, which is only 250 GT smaller.

  • Gross tonnage: 181,541
  • Passenger capacity: 4,842
  • Crew members: 1,704
  • Cabins: 2,500
  • Length: 1,087 feet
  • Number of decks: 19
  • Incoming service: 2019

When launched in 2019 and christened by MSC Cruises’ beloved godmother Sophia Loren, the ship will sail around the Mediterranean in her first season, with plans to sail to Latin America later.

However, the KOVID-19 pandemic caused a detour and MSC Grandiosa continued to sail in the Mediterranean for the time being.

Meravilla Plus Class

As mentioned earlier, MSC Grandiosa is not only the flagship of the entire MSC Cruises brand, but also of the new MSC Cruises class, the Meraviglia Plus. Other ships in the Meraviglia Plus class are in the pipeline, including the MSC Virtuosa and the MSC Europa, which is expected to make its debut in 2022.

The delivery of the MSC Virtuosi was scheduled for October 2020, with a departure at sea during the 2020-2021 winter season.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this schedule was somewhat delayed and the ship did not make its debut until early 2021, with sailings in Europe scheduled in the spring.

Environmental characteristics of MSC Grandiosa

Special attention is paid to environmental issues on all MSC Meraviglia Plus class ships. Both MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa are equipped with systems that help reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 80% and sulfur emissions by 97%. Both ships can also operate on shore power when at a berth.

It is these features that distinguish MSC Grandiosa and make it what MSC Cruises calls “one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships at sea.” MSC Cruises shares the goal of operating emission-free.

Other special environmental features include a fuel-efficient hull that consumes 28 percent less fuel than MSC’s Fantasia-class ships, the cruise line said.

There is a sophisticated waste management system to reduce, recycle and reuse all aspects of waste on board, energy-efficient LED lighting, intelligent heating and air conditioning systems, and environmentally friendly hull paints that inhibit the growth of barnacles, algae and other marine organisms.

Looking to the future, MSC Cruises is preparing the next MSC Europa to be even greener, with research and development programs focusing on new fuel cell technologies for the ship.

Cabins MSC Grandiosa

The ship has 200 more cabins than previous ships, including 200 additional cabins, as well as new family and group cabins that can connect three rooms in a row. The main types of cabins are :

  • Balcony cabins
  • Family Homes
  • Cabins with sea view
  • Cabin interiors
  • Indoor studio cabins

Every cabin and room on the ship features a new contemporary design and elegant furnishings. The high ceilings help give the impression that the interior cabins are larger than they really are, as does the lighting in the built-in jugs.

Ocean view cabins have a large sitting area, while family cabins have a balcony and in some cases can accommodate up to 12 people. Cabins with balconies have large lounges, plenty of storage space and generous sleeping accommodations.

MSC Grandiosa Suites

For an upgrade, you can book the MSC Grandiosa Suite. The basic suite can accommodate up to six people and has a very spacious balcony.

Suites with private Jacuzzi have a Jacuzzi on the balcony, placed at right angles for maximum privacy. Suites also have a hot tub on the balcony, but are even more spacious.

MSC Grandiosa Yacht Club

The MSC Yacht Club experience is essentially a VIP offering for cruisers who want everything, including the best accommodation.

MSC Yacht Club guests enjoy unlimited selection of alcoholic beverages throughout the ship at no additional cost, access to a private Yacht Club restaurant, priority check-in and check-out, access to a private lounge for daytime snacks, access to a private pool and bar, and 24-hour butler and concierge services.

The Yacht Club cabins on board MSC Grandiosa are :

  • MSC Yacht Club inside cabins
  • MSC Yacht Club Luxury Apartments
  • MSC Yacht Club duplex apartments
  • Royal Suites MSC Yacht Club.

There is plenty of room in each, but of course the Royal Suite is the best option for the highest level of luxury. The suite has a huge living area, a huge balcony, a huge bathroom – it’s all really huge.

MSC Grandiosa Restaurants

There are several restaurants on board your MSC Grandiosa cruise.

Free meal options

  • L’Olivo Doree (one of the two “main” restaurants on the ship; they serve traditional dishes in the main dining room of the cruise ship).
  • Panorama (second of the ship’s two main restaurants)
  • Market Square Buffet (informal style buffet, accessories needed on the cruise ship).
  • MSC Yacht Club Grill (accessible to Yacht Club guests only)

Unfortunately, most of the restaurants on board MSC Grandiosa are considered specialty restaurants and thus come with a price.

Restaurants with specialties

  • Kaito Sushi Bar (for Japanese cuisine)
  • Butcher’s Cut (for a classic steakhouse)
  • Ristorante Italiano (for authentic Italian food)
  • Restaurant L’Olivo d’Oro (for Mediterranean dishes)
  • Kaito Teppanyaki (for a hibachi style experience)
  • L’Atelier Bistro (a new Parisian-style offering that made its debut on MSC Bellissima and is enjoyed by many cruise passengers).
  • Il Campo (brand new restaurant with Spanish cuisine)
  • Hola Tapas Bar (offers exactly what it seems – tapas)

As you can see, you have a wide choice, especially in terms of international cuisine, although there is little American cuisine. Adventurers, however, will appreciate all the specialized restaurants on this ship.

There are also additional dining options aboard the ship, including an ice cream parlor, pancake store and chocolate shop if you want something more or sweeter, but not a full seated dinner.

Bars and lounges on MSC Grandiosa

If you want something to drink, MSC Grandiosa offers you many options. Each bar and lounge has its own atmosphere, so whatever your taste, you’re sure to find something to your liking.

  • Champagne bar (for copious amounts of champagne and other high-class pleasures)
  • Bar with copper anchor (for a more discreet atmosphere and pub character)

Entertainment

One of MSC Grandiosa’s most notable new offerings includes a Cirque du Soleil show to entertain guests. But even if you’re not into high-level acrobatics, you’ll find many other ways to be entertained aboard this ship.

Other new features include an expanded commercial promenade, which MSC Cruises says is the largest commercial space on a cruise ship.

There is a digital LED screen that covers the interior corridor and projects light shows three times a day (another first for the cruise industry), a 4-D movie theater and a virtual reality play area.

Other entertainment options include the Broadway Theater for music and dance, a television studio and bar for comedy and karaoke, and an onboard casino.

Outdoor activities for the whole family include swimming by the pool and perhaps watching a movie on the pool screen, bowling at the fully equipped bowling alley, scuba diving at the Polar Water Park or competing in a game at the Sportsplex, which offers popular activities such as basketball and soccer.

Technical Data

The ship is not only intelligent in terms of environmental protection, but it is also very technological.

MSC Grandiosa is the cruise line’s sixth ship to offer MSC for Me, an intelligent digital program that allows customers to interact with the ship and crew before, during and after their cruise.

The MSC for Me application also allows travelers to find their family and friends, manage their personal itinerary and communicate with other cruise passengers (if you don’t want to pay for expensive Wi-Fi).

You can also use the application to reserve packages for the cruise and register your credit card, so you don’t have to struggle to pay for drinks every time.

In addition, MSC Grandiosa has a new artificial intelligence system called ZOE that speaks seven languages and can communicate with you in your cabin to answer your questions and help you plan your day.

Programming for children

On board MSC Grandiosa there are several options for the children’s program. There are five different children’s clubs for different age groups. These include :

  • Cicco Children’s Club (for children ages 1 to 3).

  • Club Junior Grandiosa (ages 7 to 11).
  • Grandiosa Young Teenagers Club (ages 12 to 14).

Additional services are available for parents looking for a quiet and friendly place to relax with their baby (1-3 years), as well as for those who want to babysit at different times of the day.
